Close Guantanamo Now

Posted by joni on January 11, 2008

Today is six years since the US opened the Guantanamo prison. This was deliberately setup to be outside the jurisdiction of the US courts - so that human rights abuses and appeals for habeas corpus could not be heard.

I just attended a protest with Amnesty International outside the US Embassy on Martin Place in Sydney, where over 200 people had a peaceful protest to demand that Guantanamo is shut down. Shutting down Guantanamo will not hinder the fight against terrorism.

We must protect our processes and laws in the face of terrorism.

We had one in Adelaide too. Not as many ppl, but Terry Hicks was there which was good.

Cool - it’s not the numbers that matter. I so want to give Terry Hicks a big hug for being a great father.

I will put a photo up here soon of the Sydney protest.

Have a look at blogocracy (news.com.au/blogs) where a someone has accused me of selective moral outrage for attending the protest… grrrrr

Morons like that guy at blogocracy is the reason why I never comment on any news.com.au articles. You can’t win an argument with the ignorant right.

His comments on Amnesty International shows that his only source of news is from News Corp because if you read Irene Khan’s entire statement, she was expressing her desire for the death penalty to be abolished and mentioned the Bali bombers. Of course News Corp ran with the story that Amnesty International supports the Bali bombers to sensationalise the whole issue so they can sell more papers and make more money.

Its a sick world we live in.
