Iraqi Women in Prison – Al Jazeera rare footage

13 Oct

This rare footage from Al Jazeera by Sebastian Walker, reports on the plight of Iraqi women in jail. At the start of the clip, a woman related her story of how she approached the police looking for her missing husband, only to be imprisoned herself. Another woman , possibly an activist, says, “

The most important thing that has drawn our attention is that there were many inmates in prison who have not been investigated. One of them has been held in prison for four years without being investigated.”

The Iraqi prison is also reported to be “swelling to breaking point” according to Iraqi authorities. 4000 Iraqis have been arrested since the crackdown on February which means as many as 60,000 detainees are now jailed in Iraqi prisons. A US official said that by 2008, there will be as many as 50,000 prisoners in US run facilities.
